| Our new design seamlessly incorporates a reading light into the cover, so you can carry your Kindle wherever you go and always have a reading light with you. Simply pull the light out to illuminate Kindle when you need it, and slide it away to be invisible when you don't. And since the light draws its power from Kindle, no batteries are needed. The contoured, pebble-grain leather (available in 7 different colors) keeps your Kindle safe and secure, while the soft charcoal microfiber interior protects the screen from scratches. The cover is designed to fold back, so you can read comfortably with just one hand. The built-in, retractable LED light pulls out to illuminate Kindle, and slides away when not in use. Never Be Without a Light Our all-new Kindle cover features an integrated, retractable LED reading light that lets you read comfortably anytime, anywhere. The high-quality LED light illuminates Kindle's paper-like display, adding brightness without adding glare. A permanent part of the cover, the reading light is located in the top right-hand corner of the back cover. When needed, simply pull the light out and it automatically illuminates, eliminating the need for a separate power switch. To turn the light off, slide it back in to the corner of the cover. Since the light is powered by Kindle's battery, no batteries are needed. How It Works In addition to securing Kindle in place, our new hinge system conducts electricity from Kindle's battery to the reading light - when Kindle is attached to the hinge, an electrical connection is formed that powers the light. The cover's hinge points are gold-plated, to ensure a reliable electrical connection. Gold is used because of its ability to make good electrical contact even with low force, and for its corrosion resistance. Secure Your Kindle in Four Easy Steps Read Comfortably with One Hand Reading with the cover on, you can easily access Kindle's navigation features and power switch, while the rounded edges offer a perfect fit in your hands. The cover is designed to fold back, so you can read comfortably with just one hand. And the retractable reading light is easily accessible with the cover open or folded back. On the Go This compact cover is perfect for taking Kindle wherever you go. The sleek leather ensures the ultimate fit and protection, without adding bulk or weight. Our patent-pending hinge system secures Kindle in place, and an elastic strap keeps the cover firmly closed for maximum screen protection. Simply attach Kindle to the hinge, apply the strap, and rest assured it will stay securely in place even when you're on the go. You'll never be without a reading light, and since the light draws its power from Kindle, no batteries are needed. Amazon’s official Kindle lighted cover features contoured, pebble-grain leather available in 7 different colors. | | Read Kindle easily in the dark with Amazon's revolutionary, all-new lighted leather cover. Worth the Price September 8, 2010 Carol Donaho (Livingston, Tx USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This cover is well made and appears sturdy. The bungi cord that goes around it is an interesting idea and doesn't get in the way or cause any trouble opening. It is a bit stiff if you fold it back for reading but I'm hoping this will get better with time. It is easy to hold and the pattern on the front makes it hard to slip out of your hands.
The main reason I bought this cover was the light. I have a K2 and use an M-edge e-Luminator. Always having to slip it into the cover and buying batteries was getting on my last old person nerve. I love this little light which is more like a beacon. Last night I put it on the bed with the light on and the entire room was lit rather like you had a couple of candles going. Yes, the light is stronger at the top than the bottom, but you can still read the words and the light isn't so dim that you have any trouble seeing what you are reading.
It is hard to get the light in and out of the cover but I think practice will make it easier. If you read Kindles naked then the weight is a concern. I don't and it is so much lighter than the K2 with cover and attached light that the extra weight of the light in this cover doesn't bother me but I can see that it might others. However, if you are going to use a light with any great regularity, then this is the way to go. A stroke of genius from Amazon. The light does pull on the battery so I guess be prepared to charge it more often than you would normally, but that is to be expected.
I was originally concerned because this cover doesn't have any straps on the right side as my K2 cover did. The bungi cord strap around it helps in not trying to open it from the back and doing bad things to the hinges.
While the price might be a bit high, it is well worth it if you consider buying batteries and having to carry a light around with you. While I wouldn't say this is the greatest cover ever - it is functional and serves its purpose quite well indeed. 4 1/2 stars would be my actual rating.
Fantastic durable cover with handy light September 8, 2010 JA I love this cover. I picked the red one cause it's fairly bright without being fire engine red. It stands out nicely when in my bag, on a table, etc. Very easy to pop the Kindle in & it holds the Kindle very securely, I have no issues worrying if it might fall out. The leather is great & I figure it will last the distance rather than vinyl or other type of material. I like the light but I find it's not quite bright enough for me, I can read by it but only just (could be just my eyes :) Would be better if the light had an adjustable arm on it so you could position it where it's needed. It does save you from having to clip a light on tho or wearing a head torch.
Kindle 3 lighted cover is perfect! September 8, 2010 julio rodriguez I got my kindle 3 lighted cover one week after getting my device; using the kindle 3 without the cover was alright, but once I got the cover and attached the device I found it was perfect design, fit and protection. I am very pleased and it looks very elegant and would recommend it to all kindle 3 users.
Awesome Cover September 8, 2010 Book Lover This is a perfect cover. The light is awesome. No glare on the screen from it and it does light the whole screen. The cord that holds the cover closed when not reading also will keep the flap fold back when you are reading. I put my hand between the the folds to hang on to it when reading. Excellent job Amazon!
Great cover. Stow-away light is awesome September 8, 2010 Brian in CA (California, United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Purchased the burgundy/red version for my wife's new Kindle 3, and she loves it. Now, it does add considerable overall weight to the Kindle, so I can sympathize with those who found it too heavy. My wife doesn't seem to mind the combined weight, so I can't ding it for that.
The built-in light that is completely hidden when not in use is the best feature. It doesn't use any power from the Kindle unless the Kindle is turned on, and when it is on, the soft LED produced light it shines is perfect. Yes, the light is a bit brighter in the top right corner (the corner closest to the light), but that's not a surprise to anyone, is it? But the brighter light in the upper corner is not distracting to me or my wife. Overall, there is plenty of light cast across the entire screen to make reading perfectly comfortable; no eye strain at all. I think the improved e-ink contrast of the new Kindle 3 makes it that much easier to read with this light. My wife LOVES the way the light just stows away into the back panel of the cover when not in use. You'll never even know this thing has a light until you pull it out for use.
Attaching the Kindle to the cover is super easy. Takes about 10 seconds or less. Just follow the illustration that comes with the cover. Once you do it the first time, it makes perfect sense how it attaches and detaches. Tip: make sure the bottom metal contact gets inserted entirely, so that you cannot see any "gold" showing. When you can't see anymore metal on the bottom attachment, then complete the top attachment. This will ensure a solid installation of your Kindle into the cover.
The front cover folds completely under the back cover to allow you to read with one hand, and while some people don't like the elastic band that holds the cover shut, I think it's a nice feature that's simple and easy to use, and just plain works.
Lastly, the color is rich and beautiful, and looks great with the Kindle's graphite color. Ours didn't have a strong leather smell that some have complained about. Sure, once you first unbox it, there is some new leather smell, but after using it for a day or so, the smell isn't noticeable at all.
The $60 price seems steep to some people, but considering the features, quality and protection it provides for my wife's Kindle, it's a good value.
