Poor 3G signal September 8, 2010 Kathryn Paschke (Howard Lake, MN, US) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I love my Kindle 2 and wanted to upgrade to the next generation because it is smaller and I thought it would be easier to hold. Although Amazon bills this Latest Generation Kindle as having 3G that "works globally", they chose the AT&T network as the phone service carrier that connects the unit to Amazon on their "Whispernet". The AT&T network has a poor coverage area unless you are in a major metropolitan area. The Kindle 2 works on the Sprint network, and I never had any connection problems with it. The Kindle support representative that I spoke with said that my only option for a better connection (needed to shop in the Kindle Store and to transfer data) would be to install a Wi-Fi connection in my home. It is disturbing that Amazon did not choose to continue with the same phone service carrier, or take the opportunity to improve the service. Instead, they chose a carrier with even less coverage. Beware if you are operating this Kindle in an area that does not have a strong AT&T signal.
WOW! September 8, 2010 HAPPIGUY (TUCSON, ARIZONA, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Received my K3 August 30th. Downloaded first book several days later. Just finished that book and cannot stop raving about the device. Once I got the hang of things, a very easy process, I seemed to zip through the pages, doing something I've not done in a while... I read for hours and enjoyed it. No fatigue, no problems, well, if you ignore my cats wanting to see what I was doing... all in all a very enjoyable read. Have downloaded book #2 and am looking forward to the next read. I'm glad I chose the K3 over the many others I looked at and handled, including the Nook (somewhat cumbersome).
K3 is a matured device/system that seems to have ironed out most of the real issues. I also purchased the illuminated cover and find that to be very well done too. Bought the orange model so I can find it more easily. No complaints about the weight, although it does add some to the package. Just hold the case like a paperback and it balances just fine or remove the K3 and hold like a file folder.
I have no problem with so called lack of other functions since my K3 is exclusively for reading. I don't need the bells and whistles of a small/teeny computer. Lack of color? I read mystery novels... the color is in my head. No touch screen? Ever try to read thru all those fingerprints? Removable storage device? No... more than enough room for me. About the only real complaint I have is I'd like to be able to easily change the battery myself when the original no longer holds a charge... but what the heck, its still a great gadget. I happily give the K3 5+ stars.
LOVE IT! September 8, 2010 Stephanie Anderson (Verndale, MN) I love everything about this new and improved kindle! I have had the k2 for almost 2 years now and have loved it from the minute I got it. But this new smaller version is the best. Also love the new color. I think the graphite color makes the screen appear to have more of a contrast. This is a great size for putting in a purse or hand bag. Also easier told hold with one hand. My first impressions of the k3 is that I LOVE IT! And the lighted cover is great I love not having to change batteries and it lights up the screen great!
Disappointing and frustrating...... September 8, 2010 Carol Clarke 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
My new 3g wireless kindle has been a big disappointment.
There are various technical problmes:
The text to speech is so bad I can't stand to listen to it. For instance, when reading the Bible, it says all the verse numbers. NOT like you may think: It says them with no pause, like the number is just another word in a sentence.
The text size is ONLY for the actual books. Not even when typing in something to search for in a book.
I find that I often accidentally turn pages because the controls for that are right where I have to hold the thing.
Mine sometimes reboots for no apparent reason.
But the thing that really upsets me is the difficulty in finding anything that I want to read. Most everything I search for on Amazon is either not on kindle at all or else (this one is infuriating) it isn't available in the United States, or else it's expensive.
I tried some of the other sites (besides Amazon) looking for books and so far haven't been able to get anything downloaded from them. Unsure why.
And most of the things I have downloaded from Amazon have been disappointing in themselves. Some just plain aren't what they claim to be. Some don't have a table of contents. Some seem to be missing things. None so far (except the Bible) has been what I had hoped for. (And I haven't exactly read all of the Bible, so there may be unknown problems of some sort with IT, too.)
I think the overall problem is that the kindle technology is still new and just nneds a few more years to improve. In the meantime, I'm considering returning mine -- if I can.
Amazing- "Apple-like" Quality and Ease of Use September 8, 2010 Scott Allen (New York) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've owned all 3 iterations of the Kindle. (Yes, even the 1985 model). This time Amazon nailed it! They learned from Apple and decided to listen to their customers.
The insanely great:
1. Screen contrast is now truly as good as reading a printed book. A huge improvement from the last model.
2. Speed. You can actually move the cursor around effectively now, and page turns will keep up even with speed-readers.
3. Size. Tiny! The screen is the same size as the previous models, but feels bigger because the rest of the device is so small. I think it's as small as it can effectively get now; you have to hold on to it somehow.
4. Ergonomics. Buttons are finally well-placed, and QUIET! great for night readers sharing beds with sleepers.
5. Storage. Holds more books, no more fooling around with SD cards.
6. Battery life. Long enough that power cords are no longer needed for one-week vacations.
7. Software. Already upgraded on Kindle 2.0, "collections" feature is my favorite. Amazon took a page from Apple iPhone and made it very easy to migrate content to new hardware.
8. Price. Very reasonable. For price-conscious buyers, wifi-only makes sense. For me, the convenience of "always connected" is worth the extra few bucks and one of the key features of the Kindle.
Last two items on my wishlist:
1. Could they please build in an integrated screen protector, maybe like digital cameras have for their lenses that would cover the screen when you have it turned off? Then the need for a cover would go away.
2. Color screen. We can dream... this is probably 5 years away.
This version of the Kindle is like Mary Poppins "practically perfect in every way."
